Chief Verifier - Hairdressing
Nigel joined VTCT in 2009 in the role of Chief Verifier (Hairdressing and Barbering).
Nigel left school at the age of 15 in 1967, in an exciting period in modern culture: The Isle of Wight festival, music from the Stones, the Who, Pink Floyd – and changes in the world of hairdressing - Vidal Sassoon and Mary Quant.
He attended Solihull College day release as part of his apprenticeship to gain his hairdressing qualifications. Over the next few years Nigel entered hairdressing competitions with L’Oreal, Wella, Clynol and the NHF. These were big events, often held in dance rooms like the Tower Ballroom or Locarno in Birmingham city centre.
Nigel opened his first salon when he was 21 and the second at 25; his next salon came 27 years later. In his late twenties Nigel started teaching, and continued to do so for 22 years.
Today he still has one salon, outside Tenby in South Wales, Pembrokeshire, having relocated 10 years ago.
Nigel says “The salon is managed for me, as my role of VTCT Chief Verifier (Hairdressing & Barbering) is full time (and more!) working around the UK and overseas. Today I still enjoy the excitement of hairdressing, working in the salon, watching others and learning. In the salon, as in my role with VTCT, I enjoy working with and supporting others. Outside work I enjoy listening to music, travelling, messing about in cars, good food, a good story and maybe a beer. Hairdressing as a career has been good to me.”
