Joanne Kinney

My previous experience as a student was studying at university for my degrees. I attended the University of Leeds, the Catholic University in Leuven, Belgium and University College Dublin, Ireland. All of these related to my chosen career in Law. I worked in both Belgium and Dublin and travelled extensively.

I took a career break at the beginning of 2000 to have children. When looking to return to work, I felt that my previous career was no longer an acceptable option. I felt it was necessary to look for an alternative career in which I could balance both family and work life.

I had had some Reflexology treatments and was interested in finding out how they worked. I was also keen to learn but worried about how difficult I would find it. Returning to studying as a mature student did cause me some concern. I applied to Trafford College in 2005 and was accepted to train in Holistic Therapies. My concerns were dealt with and this opened up a new channel of interest for me. It has been the basis on which I have built my new career. I have continued with my studies, undertaking new courses every year. As a result, I have obtained additional qualifications, especially those of Reflexology and Sports Massage with VTCT and in 2008 I won bronze medal in the UK Skills Challenge, which was hosted by VTCT. I am currently studying for my Foundation Degree in Complementary Therapies

It has been possible to do this whilst maintaining my family life. I have my own spa and complementary therapy business which gives me the flexibility to work the hours that suit me. My new skill base gives me a great sense of achievement. It is an exciting area in which the challenges and possibilities to learn are endless. There are many changes occurring in the field of Complementary Therapies and it is an exciting time to be part of it.
