Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies (back)

The Diplomas in Hair and Beauty Studies are designed for young people between the ages of 14 and 19, who are interested in exploring the potential of the hair, beauty and spa industries. They are seen as the flagship of government reform of the 14-19 curriculum.

The Diplomas are compound qualifications comprising:

  • Principal Learning - providing a blend of knowledge, understanding and skils in the context of a business sector with at least 50% applied and practical learning.
  • Project - providing an opportunity to extend learners promoting the development of research and project skills in an area of their interest.
  • Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills - wider transferable skills that prepare learners for working life and lifelong learning.
  • Functional Skills - essential skills in English, Maths and ICT.
  • Additional and Specialist Learning - additional studies to allow specialisation (eg providing vocational training in hairdressing or beauty therapy) or broadening of the young persons programme of study.

Edexcel and VTCT partnership

VTCT is delighted to be working in partnership with Edexcel to deliver the Principal Learning to Edexcel consortia. This partnership arrangement will allow Edexcel to promote the Diplomas in Hair and Beauty Studies to their extensive network of centres in schools and colleges and to register learners onto the VTCT Principal Learning Qualifications. Consequently Edexcel can provide the full suite of Principal qualifications. Consortia currently working directly with VTCT or wishing to work directly with VTCT may continue as present but consortia preferring to register their learners with Edexcel may take this route. Whichever approach is taken, VTCT will provide assessment services, standards moderation and specialist support.
