Frequently Asked Questions

Below are the most frequently asked questions regarding the plan for adaptations for Performance Table Qualifications in the academic year 2020/2021.

General Questions

What is the last date you can register a learner?

VTCT recommends registering learners in a timely way, typically within 8 weeks of them starting their qualification. It is important for learners to be registered on a VTCT qualification for them to be eligible for adaptations.

We also recommend that you review all in progress learners to withdraw any that are no longer at your centre.

How do I apply for an adaptation?

VTCT will release a guidance document for centres to support PTQ adaptation and this will contain specific information about the application process for adaptation.

We will communicate to centres once these are available, we expect this to be very soon.

I have applied for a reasonable adjustment for my learner. What will happen to them?

VTCT will process reasonable adjustment requests following the standard process. Please continue to make these applications to support your learners who need them. VTCT will issue further guidance if needed in due course.

Assessment

Will I still have an EQA visit if there is a lockdown?

Typically, the PTQs have 2 EQA visits each academic year. We expect that due to the changing landscape due to covid-19 these may be held remotely.

Our colleagues in Quality Assurance will share specific information about the EQA process in due course.

How will the change from synoptics to professional discussion work and will centres be given guidance?

VTCT has chosen to make the standardised adaptation at the start of the academic year to ensure that there is parity of assessment for all learners to protect the reliability and validity of the synoptic assessment. VTCT will of course publish guidance documents for centres once our proposed PTQ adaptations have been approved by Ofqual.

Can learners use other people in their bubble to complete formative assessments?

Yes, there are no client requirements which prevent this in these qualifications.

However, the situation is ever-changing and centres will need to adhere to current UK Government advice on close contact services and public health advice.

Exams

A learner in my group got an estimated grade last summer. Can they re-sit to try for a higher grade?

Yes. Learners who received an estimated grade last summer are able to re-take the examination or assessment component.

We have our contingency assessment series this autumn to support learners wishing to re-take a component or complete their qualification.

Am I able to use remote invigilation for exams using Zoom?

This is an important question to emphasise the difference for these high stakes PTQ qualifications.

Unfortunately, centres will not be able to use platforms such as Zoom to complete remote invigilation. All requests for remote invigilation will need to be approved before centres can start to use this method. VTCT will launch a remote invigilation solution that will be conducted and managed using software embedded within our existing Linx2Achieve e-testing system.

The learners in my group do not have access to computers at home. How can they do exams remotely?

Centres will submit an application to VTCT requesting approval to implement remote invigilation for external examinations.

The application will require centres to demonstrate that they have ensured that all learners have access to technology to support the online platforms/systems and that no learner will be disadvantaged due to their socioeconomic circumstances or geographical location.

If this is not possible, then VTCT will be able to support the centre with other existing flexibilities within our adaptation toolkit.

Have you published the Key Dates for 2020-2021?

Yes. These were published at the beginning of October and are available for centres to access on the qualification pages of each of the PTQs.

My centre is still open but we are reducing the number of students in the class. Can some of them take the exam on one day and others take it on another day in an exam week?

Unfortunately not. The controls are still in place for all learners at a centre to take the same examination on the same day and at the same time.

VTCT can support centres to have different sittings of the same exam paper, where learners are kept in separately until they have completed the exam. Centres will need to complete an Assessment Date Variation Form and submit it to VTCT for approval.

More information about this can be found on page 3 of the Key dates document.
