Frequently Asked Questions

Below we will add any frequently asked questions that we receive relating to this webinar.

General

We are currently delivering post-16 HB3D1 & HB2D1. Do they still complete practical assessments and the end point assessment?

Learners will complete the unit graded assessments using any adaptations we have made available for the learners. You will be able to submit a TAG for the external exams/synoptic practical assessment using sufficient sources of evidence.

Can you confirm the percentage of IQA needed for a centre delivering a Technical Level Qualification for the first year in these circumstances?

The TAGs will have two teachers to agree the grade for each learner, and so in effect you have a 100% sample for IQA. For the assessments which are taking place please refer to the qualification specifications on guidance on IQA. As always IQA is risk based so in your first year of delivery we would expect to see a larger sample carried out which may need to be increased further dependent on the outcome of the first IQA sample.

Is it possible to send us a timeline of processes needed before the webinar?

All of the guidance documents, including timelines and forms are available for centres to access on our PTQ area of the website.

Is there a specific template we should use to provide our exams officer with the information for the first data collection on learner statuses?

There is no template for this internal centre process, however, centres need to ensure you have accurate records of decision making. For the data collection it will be important to record any decisions made on reasons why you are not submitting a TAG for a learner.

Will this also address mid-flight learners, e.g. Year 12 on a Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing?

This is a non-certificating learner and we are allowing centres to submit a TAG. Please refer back to the guidance and the slides for information about sources of evidence and the qualification website for the new optional exemplar exam paper that we have published to support the TAG process.

Can I just check that we need to make entries for the Paper 1 and Paper 2 exams for BT3D6 in order to submit a TAG for the summer?

Yes, that is correct. The webinar on the 7th May will provide further information on the process for creating schedules and submitting TAGs.

Can you use Pivot Point LAB evidence for Papers 1 and 2?

VTCT are not prescribing the sources of evidence centres should use. However, centres must complete the steps outlined in the Guidance for Teachers document on how to evaluate the quality of the source to determine if it reflects the learner’s level of attainment.

For the synoptic, is it the evidence from the graded assessments? Will there not be a professional discussion taking place?

Unit graded practical assessment grades will be the primary source of evidence for the synoptic practical assessment TAG. The Guidance for Teachers document provides guidance on other appropriate sources of information to support this TAG. VTCT has removed the adaptation of the professional discussion for this assessment component.

Do we need to use the past papers? We have designed end of unit multiple choice and short answer questions plus case study for each unit for evidence?

The exemplar papers are an optional resource centres may use if they feel further evidence needs to be generated. Centres must complete the steps outlined in the Guidance for Teachers document on how to evaluate the quality of the source to determine if it reflects the learner’s level of attainment.

Can the class teacher and the IQA sign off a TAG?

Yes the second teacher may be the internal quality assurer at the centre.

Do our students on the Patisserie courses Level 2 and Level 3 complete a practical synoptic exam or is it graded from unit assessments?

Learners are required to undertake the unit graded practical assessments. Centres will then submit a TAG for the synoptic practical assessment.

Why are your TAG submission dates 21st May when other GQ Tags are 18th June?

VTCT are closely aligning with the approach taken in General Qualifications wherever possible. The submission deadline allows appropriate time for VTCT to complete the external quality assurance of the TAGs, issue results and for centres to claim the learner’s certificate.

Do we need to create a schedule on linx2achieve for paper 1 and paper 2 even though they aren’t running?

Yes, that is correct. The webinar on the May 7th will provide further information on the process for creating schedules and submitting TAGs.

Can you please confirm how results are issued to centres?

There is no change to the process of VTCT issuing results for the qualifications. Exam officers will be able to access them via linx2achieve on the embargoed results day in July. Centres are encouraged to contact Customer Support if they would like support with this process.

For the level 3 Beauty Technical Diploma, will learners still be able to select the two pieces of equipment for body and facial electrical graded assessments?

VTCT are not making any adaptations to the requirements learners are required to complete in the unit graded practical assessments.

Can graded assessments in beauty still be completed?

Yes, however, whether external clients will be brought in for assessments is an internal centre decision.

How do we manage ManageAssess changes to service portfolio and synoptic? Can we upload formative evidence for the service portfolio?

ManageAssess is a tool for centres to use to to track progress of your learner on their qualification, and you may continue to use it to review evidence to support the decision making that underpins your TAG judgement. However, ManageAssess sits outside of the TAG process. Centres will need to follow the process for set out for TAGs in the Guide for Teachers document.

Do the sources of evidence for the papers need to be a full completed past paper or can these be a reduced amount but still covering all units?

VTCT are not prescribing the sources of evidence centres should use. However, centres must complete the steps outlined in the Guidance for Teachers document on how to evaluate the quality of the source to determine if it reflects the learner’s level of attainment.

When we are doing graded assessments can the extra assessor join it remotely?

VTCT would ask centres to reflect on their internal processes for remote internal quality assurance. VTCT are hosting a webinar on 4th May 2021 which covers internal quality assurance arrangements. Please also discuss this proposal with your EQA.

Can we adapt graded assessments, e.g. one hand in a manicure rather than both or part of the body for massage?

VTCT are not making any adaptations to the requirements learners are required to complete in the unit graded practical assessments.

Can we do larger groups for graded assessments more than 6 students?

VTCT would ask centres reflect on their ability to effectively assess learners using the granular hierarchical assessment criteria if numbers are increased. Please discuss this proposal with your EQA.

Where can I find the exemplar papers?

Exemplar papers are on the qualifications page of the VTCT website.
